However, due to climate change, the snow line on these mountains is retreating, forcing the Ili Pika to move to even higher altitudes, shrinking its already limited habitat.
Another significant threat is human encroachment. Increased livestock grazing and expanding tourism into previously untouched regions have disturbed their fragile environment. Conservationists report that over the past few decades, the Ili Pika’s population has dropped by nearly 70%.

Unlike many endangered species that have designated reserves and conservation programs, the Ili Pika currently has no official protection program tailored specifically for its survival. Li Weidong, who has devoted his life to studying and protecting the Ili Pika, once funded expeditions from his own savings when outside support was scarce.
In 2014, after years without a confirmed sighting, Li and his team managed to capture new photographs of the Ili Pika — the first in 20 years. The images showed the adorable animal peeking out from its rocky den, instantly reigniting global attention and sparking calls for urgent conservation measures.
Despite its cute appearance and the media buzz surrounding it, the Ili Pika remains critically endangered. Without immediate action to preserve its alpine home and mitigate human impact, this endearing creature could vanish in our lifetime.
